`Aviation security lapse'

By T.S. Shankar

CHENNAI, NOV. 12. The seven-member State police team, which flew to Hyderabad on Thursday night from Chennai in the State Government-owned Cessna aircraft, had no official permission from the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation or the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security for transporting policemen armed with arms and ammunition, including an "assault rifle".

"We have apprised the top brass of the Airports Authority of India about this aviation security lapse," said a senior official of the Chennai airport.

The non-scheduled sorties made by the helicopter and the Cessna aircraft had the ingredients of a secret mission as both initially flew to Bangalore at 6-25 p.m. and 8-25 p.m. respectively and later diverted their flight plan to rush to Hyderabad as the arrest of Sri Jayendra Saraswati was executed at Mahbubnagar near Hyderabad. It was not immediately known why they flew to Bangalore in the first place.
