2 police personnel suspended

ERODE NOV. 12. The Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Coimbatore Range, yesterday placed under suspension the Modakurichi inspector, Anbazhagan, and sub-inspector, Yamunadevi, following a liquor death at Velankattuvalasu.

Perumal (45), a carpenter of Avalpoondurai died after consuming liquor three days ago.

Another person, who consumed liquor with him, is undergoing treatment in the Government Headquarters hospital here.

Explosives seized, 2 held

Nagercoil Nov 12. The `Q' branch police yesterday arrested the driver and cleaner of a tempo van and seized a large quantity explosive materials near here.

According to police sources, on a tip-off a team intercepted the tempo at Paraicode near Thuckalay and seized 44 gunny bags of explosive materials (45 kg each) and one lakh gelatin sticks.

During interrogation the driver told the police that all the materials were meant for a person at Pudukadai.

Army recruitment drive

CHENNAI NOV. 12. The Army will conduct a week-long recruitment drive at Ulundurpet, Villupuram district, from November 16 for enrolment of soldiers from northern districts of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. The recruitment is for the categories of tradesman, technical, clerk and general duty.

According to a Defence Ministry release, the process comprises document checking, a physical fitness test, medical examination and written test. The criteria of age, qualification and physical and medical standards vary from category to category as also the date of recruitment, which depends on the nativity of the candidate and the category to which he wants to enrol.

Aspirants are required to come to the venue at 5 a.m. bringing with them all necessary original documents together with copies and seven photos. Further information can be had at the Recruiting Office, Island Grounds or on phone (25316916.)

Children's Day stamp

CHENNAI NOV. 12. The Department of Posts will release a commemorative postage stamp in the denomination of Rs. 5 on the occasion of Children's Day.

The stamp, first-day cover and information sheet will be available for sale at all philatelic bureaux/counters from the date of issue, according to a press release.

The department will also release a special cover and provide a cancellation on the occasion of "100 years of Mahakavi Bharathi as Teacher at the Sethupati Higher Secondary School, Madurai." A philatelic counter will function on the school premises on November 14. Special covers at Rs.10 each will be available for sale there.

Award for BHEL Ranipet

VELLORE Nov.12. The Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL), Ranipet has won the Green Tech Environment Excellence Bronze Award in Engineering Sector for 2003-2004.

The award is given by the Green Tech Foundation, a non-profit organisation established to promote education, training, research and dissemination of knowledge, advancing the scientific, technical and practical aspects of waste management and climate change to safeguard environment. Organisations that are enviro-friendly and comply with the standards of the foundation are being assessed and given — the gold, silver and bronze awards — every year.

The bronze award was presented by Rakesh Nath, Chairman, Bhakra Beas Management Board to V. Balakrishnan, Assistant General Manager/Human Resources and Civil, BHEL, Ranipet at function held recently in Hyderabad, says a BHEL press release.

IOB merger ruled out

CHENNAI NOV.12. The Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, has clarified that there is no proposal under consideration to merge the Indian Overseas Bank with a bank in north India.

In a reply to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president, M. Karunanidhi, he said that reports to this effect were "speculative and there was no basis at all."

Multimedia campaign

CHENNAI NOV. 12. A multimedia campaign on the Common Minimum Programme will be inaugurated on November 14 by the Union Minister of Finance, P.Chidambaram, in Madurai.

The programme, organised by the Inter Media Publicity Co-ordination Committee, Chennai, under the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, will last for six days and will cover Madurai and 30 neighbouring villages. It will be marked by interaction with the public on various issues such as bank loans, insurance, skill enhancement modules, success stories of self-help groups, self- employment opportunities and health awareness.

Among those participating in the programme are various public sector organisations, including banks, insurance companies, State Government departments, SHGs, Department of Posts and BSNL. Inputs for the workshops to be conducted during the campaign came from Small Industries Service Institute, Central Food Technology Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, the Krishi Vikas Kendras of Gandhigram University and a number of self-help groups.

Elocution competitions for schoolchildren, cultural programmes, film shows and thematic seminars will be held during the six days. Mr. Chidambaram will kick off the campaign at Sethupathi Higher Secondary School, Madurai on November 14.

One killed

PUDUKOTTAI NOV 12 . One person was killed and seven sustained injuries when the lorry in which they were travelling overturned on the highway at Lena Villaku near Thirumayam today.

The police gave the name of the deceased as Muthu (35) of Pattukottai in Thanjavur district.

A group of 12 persons from Madukkur near Pattukottai were on their way to Tuticorin in the lorry to purchase fish when the mishap occurred.

The lorry overturned while trying to avoid hitting a motorcycle. The injured were admitted to the Government Hospital here for treatment.

The Namanasamudram police are investigating the case.

Grievance Day

NAGAPATTINAM NOV.12 . The Collector, M.Veera Shanmugha Moni, convened a meeting of farmers of this district at the Collectorate here on Nov.18 at 10.30 a.m. to hear their grievances and redress their problems.

TIRUCHI NOV.12 . The Tiruchi station of the All India Radio will broadcast the recorded discourse of the late Tirumuruga Kirubanandavariar on `Kanda Puranam' from Nov. 12 to 17 from 8-45 a.m. to 9-45 a.m. in the main channel in connection with the Kandar Shashti.

In the F.M. Rainbow Channel, during the above six days V. Rathna Sharma will present relay talk on `Adi Sankarar Aruliya Subramania Bujangam: slokas and interpretations' at 6 a.m.

Mettur level

Tiruchi Nov. 12. The water level at the Mettur reservoir stood at 99.10 feet today. The inflow was 8,668 cusecs and the discharge 100 cusecs.

Mass Contact Day

ERODE NOV.12. The Erode District Revenue Officer, K. Nagarajan will conduct mass contact day on November 17 in Kurukkathy panchayat union elementary school in Senapathypalayam, Kangeyam taluk. The public are requested to represent their reasonable grievances for redressal.

Shops raided

ERODE NOV.12. As per the instructions of the Registrar of Cooperative Societies, the Joint Registrar of Cooperatives, Erode Region, B. Joghee and Deputy Registrar, Shanmugam raided 66 ration shops in Gobichettipalayam and Sathyamangalam taluks two days back.

The officials noticed shortage of commodities in some ration shops, preparation of bogus bills and sale of ration commodities in some other shops. Officials levied a fine of Rs 12,005 to erring salesmen.

Ex gratia payment

ERODE NOV.12 . The Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa has granted Rs 50,000 each to the kith and kin of the two who died in wall collapse owing to heavy rain. The District Collector, D. Karthikeyan said on October 31 Selvaraj of Lakkampatty, Gobi taluk and Vanjinayagi, daughter of Somasundaram of Nasiyanure died in wall collapse.

Held for murder

TIRUNELVELI NOV. 12. The Shencottai police have arrested a youth for allegedly murdering an old man on Thursday night.

The police said R. Samudhrakani, 35, of Thaenpoththai, who opposed the bursting of crackers near his house, entered into an argument with M. Bhagavathi, 22. Samudhrakani allegedly attacked Bhagavathi with an iron rod. However, M. Madasamy, 65, who intervened, received some blows on the head and died on the spot.

Hunters fined

TIRUNELVELI NOV. 12. The Forest Department personnel nabbed two persons who were found wandering in the forests to hunt down hares on Wednesday.

Sources said a patrol team, led by the ranger, Manimaran, intensified vigil around the Gangaikondan deer park on the eve of Deepavali, as they suspected that the poachers might come to the nearby forests to hunt hares.

The team spotted Karuppasamy, 32, and V. Veerapandi, 32, of Paerilovanpatti in Tuticorin district, wandering near the park and intercepted them. The duo admitted that they had come over there to hunt hares. The District Forest Officer, H. Venu Prasad, slapped a fine of Rs. 3,000 on each and let them off.

Two held for assault

TUTICORIN NOV. 12 . The police today arrested two youths for having assaulted a 46-year-old man with a knife on Thursday evening.

The police said Manikantan, 21, and Raj, 20, attacked Alwarsamy at Vallinayakapuram, because of enmity.Mr. Alwarsamy was injured and admitted to the government hospital here. The duo was remanded, the police said.

Teacher suspended

TUTICORIN NOV. 12 . E. Sankaranarayan, a teacher of the government high school teacher at Chekkarakudi, was suspended for instigating students to lodge a complaint about the school administration with the Collector.

Official sources said a group of students submitted a memorandum to the Collector, V Chandrasekaran, in the first week of November, alleging irregularities in the administration.

It came to light that Mr. Sankaranarayan motivated the students to submit the petition directly to the Collector, instead of bringing the matter to the attention of the higher officials.
