CHENNAI, NOV. 12. The inclement weather in the city on Friday claimed the life of a 22-year old woman. S. Mariammal, a resident of V.O.C. Street in T. Nagar, died this afternoon when she went to the terrace of the house to dry clothes and was struck by lightning. Her body was later taken to Government Royapettah Hospital for post mortem. The city experienced heavy showers today under the influence of a trough of low pressure over the southwest Bay of Bengal. An official from the Regional Meteorological Centre said that Nungambakkam recorded a rainfall of 8 cm and Meenambakkam 5 cm between 8.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. The intensity of the rain was felt in many areas of the city. Traffic in many parts of the city was affected due to water logging, exposing yet again the lack of a proper drainage system. Motorists had to negotiate knee-deep water on General Patters Road, Royapettah, and many vehicles were trapped in low-lying areas such as Zam Bazaar in Triplicane. The same was the condition on Pallavan Salai, which was also choked with rainwater. Vehicular movement on Ramakrishna Mutt Road, Mylapore was also disrupted during the morning hours due to heavy showers. Motorists on Poonamallee High Road experienced a similar situation as flooded stretches slowed down traffic on the entire stretch. Many residential areas in the city such as Velachery, Kolathur and Ambattur have been witnessing flooding following rains for the past few days. The storage of the city reservoirs also saw a slight increase following the inflows. Red Hills received an inflow of 90 cubic feet per second, resulting in a storage of 713 million cubic feet of water. The combined storage of the reservoirs today was 967 mcft against the total capacity of 7,412 mcft.
