VIJAYAWADA, NOV. 12. The District Collector, K. Prabhakara Reddy, has said that the Cooperative Week should be celebrated on a grand scale in the district from November 14 to 20. At a review meeting, he said seminars and other programmes would mark the celebrations. A seminar would be held on `Role of cooperative societies in nation building and their relation with the new economic order' on November 14. Workshops on `Standard cooperative administration-self-help groups and model cooperatives Act' would be held on November 15. Workshops on November 16, 17 and 18 respectively would be on `Empowerment of backward sections through cooperative bodies', `Cooperative housing societies and better living conditions' and `Consumers Day and cooperative marketing and processing'. Cooperative day celebrations for development of urban and rural areas would be organised on November 19 followed by a programme on `Professional organisation and leadership development in cooperative sector' on November 20. The District Cooperative Officer, G. Venkateswara Reddy, the district cooperative milk union president, M. Janakiramaiah, and representatives of cooperative unions participated in the meet.
Blindness control
At another meeting to review the blindness control programme, the Collector asked officials to take steps to eradicate cataract in the district. Mr. Reddy said 1,69,738 schoolchildren were screened for eye problems between April and September 2004. Of them, 4,733 were found to be having problems and 800 of them were given spectacles.
