Temple authorities protest against Seer's arrest

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, NOV. 12. Less than 24 hours after the Kanchi Seer, Sri Jayendra Saraswati, was whisked away by the Tamil Nadu police from Mahbubnagar late on Thursday night, temple administrators here got to chalk out their future course of action.

With Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Mutt in the lead, a rally was taken out in Padmarao Nagar by people in the evening. Later, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad called a meeting.

On Saturday, a rally will be taken out by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad from Bagh Lingampally to Indira Park. On behalf of the Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Mutt, a rally will start from Skandagiri and join the main procession at Bagh Lingampally.

`Arjitha sevas' stopped

In response to a call by the Mutt representatives here, including J.L.N. Sarma, more than half-a-dozen prominent temples put a halt to `Arjitha Sevas', while continuing with common pujas.

The said `sevas' are those special services performed by priests in the name of individual devotees.

By late in the evening, dozens of opinion-makers representing religious organisations squatted outside the Skandagiri Temple. Several of them, including residents of Padmarao Nagar, were heard shouting that the Hanuman Temple in Skandagiri, with the Kanchi Kamakoti Mutt office on its premises, be closed for prayer so that people would get the message and rise up in revolt.

Ramesh, Vice-Chairman of Ashtalakshmi Temple in Ramakrishnapuram, Chandrasekhar Rao, a lecturer representing the Gayatri Seva Samithi, Chandrasekhar Sarma Siddhantha and several other prominent locals gave vent to their protest.
