Stir threat by Uttaranchal activists

By Our Staff Correspondent

DEHRA DUN, NOV. 13. The Uttarakhand Sanyukt Sangharsh Morcha and the Uttarakhand Mahila Manch have threatened a State-wide agitation if the Government did not drop its plans to construct a new multi-crore Raj Bhavan building in Dehra Dun and scrap the Dixit Commission supposed to identify a place for establishing the permanent Capital of the State in place of Dehra Dun.

The Commission is exploring possibilities of establishing the Capital at Gairsen, Kalagarh, Rishikesh and some other places. It has sought estimates to carry out the detailed feasibility survey at Gairsen in Chamoli district from the Geological Survey of India and the Indian Institute of Technology- Roorkee.

Enraged by the plans, the activists -- comprising common citizen from various walks of life -- described the Dixit Commission as a farce. "The Government is trying to divert public attention from the high level corruption by asking the masses to give suggestions to the Commission. Will the Chief Minister, Narain Dutt Tiwari, explain why huge amounts are being spent on the Commission when he is adamant on making Dehra Dun the Capital?" asked Neena Sajwan, a social worker.

The administration has finalized a plan to construct a Rs 13 crore Raj Bhawan complex complete with a swimming pool and library near the existing Raj Bhawan at Circuit House as the present building, though a sprawling historic structure, was lacking in many facilities, official sources said.
