Fire in shopping plaza

By Our Special Correspondent

JAIPUR, NOV. 13. A major fire broke out in the basement of a popular shopping complex, Gaurav Towers, in the Malaviya Nagar locality here on Saturday. There was no casualty as all the shops were closed at the time the fire was detected in the early hours as Pink City, which had a late night after Diwali celebrations, woke up lazily to another festival holiday today.

It took nearly six hours for a crew of 150 from the fire brigade of the Jaipur Municipal Corporation to put out the flames and billowing smoke. Apart from fire tenders, bulldozers too were pressed into service to grill holes into the ground level balcony of the complex to let out smoke from inside the closed shops.

The Chief Secretary, R.K. Nair, visited the spot while the District Collector, Sudhansh Pant, and the DIG, Jaipur (Range I), O.P. Galotra, remained at the venue to supervise the fire-fighting operations. The fire was brought under control around 12 noon after the fire tenders making some 100 rounds.

The Fire Officer, Om Prakash Sharma, said the reasons for the fire as well as the damages were being assessed. There is a general feeling that an earthen lamp left inside one of the shops as "akhand deep''(lamp burning throughout the night) must have caused the fire.

The authorities were worried about the fire reaching up to the generator set installed at the back portion of the five-storey building which houses about 100 shops and offices, as well as the cooking gas cylinders kept in the kitchens of the eateries.

The complex, which houses a MacDonald's outlet, the Planet M and other teen attractions in the Rajasthan capital was alive with Diwali shoppers and revellers till well after midnight ton Friday.
