Accused in harassment case arrested

By Our Staff Correspondent

BIDAR, NOV. 13. The Humnabad police arrested Imran Khan Ayub Khan, accused of harassing a girl last week, ending three days of mild tension following protests by Dalit organisations demanding his arrest. The town is peaceful now.

The accused has been remanded in judicial custody till November 16.

According to the police, a group led by Imran Khan and Kunal Shivraj Kattimani, brother of the victim, clashed last Friday and a few persons received minor injuries. Acting on a complaint filed by Imran Khan and others, the police arrested Thomas, a friend of Kattimani, last Saturday.

Mr. Kattimani filed a complaint against Imran Khan under the Atrocities on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention) Act, on Wednesday. They also demanded that the police immediately arrest Imran Khan.

A few buses were damaged in the stone-throwing incident that followed and tension gripped Humnabad on Wednesday. Senior officials and additional troupes rushed to the town and prohibitory orders were clamped.

Timely intervention by the police and the district administration helped control the situation. On Saturday, markets were open.

Additional policemen have been deployed in and around the town as a precautionary measure.
