Award for C.G.K. Nair
BANGALORE NOV. 13. The president of the Society of Indian Aerospace Technology Industries (SIATI) and former Chairman of Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL), C.G. Krishnadas Nair, has been chosen for the Platinum Medal Award by the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) for his contribution to metallurgy, education, research and the IIM of which he was president from 1997 to 99. The Foundry and Forge Division of HAL, Bangalore Complex, has been selected for the IIM Quality Award in the field of non-ferrous metallurgy. The awards will be presented at the 42nd National Metallurgists' Day celebrations of the Indian Institute of Metals on November 17 at the Rajiv Gandhi Convention Centre at Kovalam, near Thiruvananthapuram.
Concreting work completed
Bangalore Nov. 13. Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd. (KPCL) has completed concreting of a turbine generator foundation raft (1,170 cubic metres) at the Bellary Thermal Power Station two months ahead of schedule. A press release issued here said the concreting work was completed on November 10. The release said 8,532 bags of cement and 280 tonnes of steel were used. Other works related to the project "are in full swing," the release added.
Nominees to VTU council
BANGALORE NOV. 13. Superseding the earlier notification, the Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, has appointed S.C. Sharma, Principal of Rashtriya Vidyalaya College of Engineering, and C.V. Harish of Bangalore as nominees of the State Government on the Executive Council of the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) in Belgaum till September 17, 2007, according to a Raj Bhavan communiqué issued here.
Krishna leaves for China
BANGALORE NOV. 13. The former Chief Minister S.M. Krishna on Saturday left for China to attend a conference on information technology and visit some cities and industrial centres in that country. Mr. Krishna, who had taken many initiatives on the information technology front in the State when he was heading the Government, will deliver a lecture in Beijing. The former Chief Minister is expected to visit Shanghai and other cites during his 20-day tour. Mr. Krishna will return to Bangalore in the first week of December, according to official sources.
Special train to Ajmer
HUBLI Nov. 13. South Western Railway has decided to introduce a weekly special train, Yeshwantpur-Ajmer-Yeshwantpur, from Sunday from Yeshwantpur and from Tuesday from Ajmer. The weekly special will leave Yeshwantpur on Sunday at 8 p.m. and reach Ajmer on Tuesday at 6.20 p.m. In the return direction, the train will leave Ajmer on Wednesday at 5.35 a.m. and reach Yeshwantpur at 3.30 a.m. on Friday. The train will run via Arsikere, Davangere, Hubli, Belgaum, Miraj, Satara, Pune, Vasai Road, Surat, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Abu Road, and Marwar. The train will have 15 coaches, according to an official press note issued here today.
Matrimonial meet
HYDERABAD NOV. 13. Samyukta Karnataka Sangh, Pune, will organise a get-together and matrimonial meet on November 26 at Sree Raghavendra Swamy Temple, Jewargi Colony, Gulbarga, for all communities. Prospective brides and grooms, and widows and divorcees can register their names with the sangha. The aim is to unite all castes and sub-castes, according o a press release issued here.
Man killed
in accident
The police have identified the deceased as Thimmappa (20). The injured were brought to the District Civil Hospital here. The bus, which was carrying about 20 passengers, fell into a ditch after the driver lost control, police said. The Gabbur police have registered a case.
Awareness run
The president of the IMA, Belalry chapter, Yoganand Reddy, will flag off the run from the IMA Hall. Doctors, several members of the public, and schoolchildren would be taking part in the run, said B.K. Sundar, general secretary.
Vacant posts
In a letter to the Government, the president of the samiti, Shivraj Raga, said that the drinking water scarcity in the hospital had made several doctors avoid night duty, which had made the 100-bed hospital ineffective. The people were forced to seek medical care in either Maharashtra or Andhra Pradesh, he added.

In a press release here on Saturday, Mr. Saeed hoped that the festival, likely to be celebrated on Sunday, would help promote unity, brotherhood, peace, tolerance and coexistence among the communities in the country. Mr. Saeed said the festival had a strong relationship with the Koran, which was the basis of peace, development and co-existence. He urged Muslims to celebrate the festival with the people of other communities and develop unity and understanding among one another.
