By Our Staff Reporter
PERAMBALUR, NOV.13 . A sum of Rs.69.90 crores will be spent during the current financial year on providing infrastructure facilities in rural areas in Perambalur district. The works would be executed under the `Rural Infrastructure Development' scheme of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). While the NABARD sanctioned Rs. 62.27 crores, the State Government contributed Rs.7.63 crores. Development of rural roads was given top priority since bad roads hindered growth of economic activity. A total of 130 rural roads to a cumulative distance of about 530 km in different parts of the district would be developed at an outlay of Rs.45.51 crores. Rural roads would not only be strengthened but also widened, official sources said here today. As many villages could not be linked due to absence of bridges or culverts, a survey was conducted and sites for construction of bridges were identified. A sum of Rs.19.40 crores was sanctioned for construction of 36 bridges. Funds were released for modernisation of irrigational source at Agaram Sigur besides five tanks Varahupadi, Pandianeri, Thennur Eri, Karai Keezha and Mela Eri besides Kannapadi. In fact, the work on modernisation of Pandianeri was completed while the work in the case of other tanks was progressing. Irrigational facility would be provided to another 150 acres.
