MANGALORE, NOV. 13. Mangalore University has framed guidelines for the appointment of principals and teachers in its affiliated colleges. The Academic Council of the university approved the guidelines at its meeting held here recently. To be appointed as principal, candidates should possess at least a second-class Master's degree or equivalent qualification with at least 55 per cent marks. They should have at least 10 years of teaching experience as a full-time teacher or a Ph.D. degree with at least five years of teaching experience as a full-time teacher at the degree or postgraduate level or both. They must be eligible to teach one of the subjects taught in a course in the college. The upper age limit is 60.
Exemption
The guidelines say the condition of 55 per cent marks need not be insisted upon for candidates who joined as a regular teacher prior to March 1999 in the college where they are being elevated as principal.
Qualification for teacher
For being appointed teacher in an affiliated college, candidates should have a Master's degree with at least second-class or equivalent qualification with at least 55 per cent marks in the relevant subject.
UGC directive
The Vice-Chancellor, B. Hanumaiah, told the meeting that according to a recent University Grants Commission (UGC) directive, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates need to have only 50 per cent marks in the relevant subject. In case, the guidelines say, if no recognised institution in the country offers a Master's or a Bachelor's degree in any course or a subject of a course, a Bachelor's degree in general with at least a two-year diploma in the subject by a recognised institution might be prescribed.
