Welfare schemes launched
NEW DELHI,
NOV. 14.
Launching of welfare schemes for the downtrodden, cultural programmes by children and other festivities marked the celebrations of the 115th birth anniversary of the first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, today.
The main function was held at Shanti Van here where the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, along with the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, paid tributes to the architect of modern India.
Mr. Singh and Ms. Gandhi, accompanied by a host of dignitaries including Union Ministers and Members of Parliament, also paid floral tributes to the portrait of Nehru in the Central Hall of Parliament.
Later, the Prime Minister launched the National Food For Work Programme, initially covering 150 most backward districts and providing additional supplementary wage employment through creation of need-based economic, social and community assets, at Aloor in Ranga Reddy district of Andhra Pradesh.
The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, inaugurated the annual India International Trade Fair in Delhi.
