Law must take its course: Left

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, NOV. 14. The Left today called upon the Tamil Nadu Government not to give in to any pressures and to allow the law to take its own course with regard to the arrest of the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) said the prosecution had stated that there was sufficient evidence to proceed against Sri Jayendra Saraswathi. "Nobody is above [the] law and the judicial process should proceed unhindered," observed the CPI (M). "The efforts of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and some other forces to give a communal angle to this affair is condemnable."

The CPI (M) said that while the case should be pursued with sensitivity keeping in mind the religious status of the individual, this was not a religious matter.

The Communist Party of India (CPI) said that whether it was the Kanchi Sankaracharya or anyone else, nobody could claim to be above the law. Calling upon the State Government to uphold the rule of the law, the party condemned the attempts by the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Sangh Parivar to divert the issue by giving it a communal angle.
