ADILABAD, NOV. 14. About 100 cotton farmers from Sunkidi, Kapparla, Bandalnagapur and Tamsi villages in Tamsi mandal staged a rasta roko at Sunkidi cross roads, 11 km. from here on Sunday for about one hour. The farmers were demanding release of compensation ordered by the Adilabad District Consumers Forum in September for failure of cotton crop in Kharif 2000 due to inferior quality seeds by two well-known seed companies. The rasta roko was staged under the aegis of the Adilabad Akhila Paksha Rythu Sangham. According to the Sangham president, B. Goverdhan Reddy, about 300 cotton farmers in Tamsi, Bela and Jainad had incurred losses due to poor quality cotton seeds supplied by the two companies in an area of about 1,500 acres in the year 2000. Based on the complaint of the farmers scientists had conducted an inquiry which found the seeds to be of inferior quality.
Petition to Forum
The farmers petitioned the District Consumer Forum in the year 2001 based on the report of the investigating scientists. On September 12, this year, the forum ruled in favour of the farmers. The forum ordered the companies concerned to compensate the farmers at the rate of Rs. 8,000 per acre with a penal interest of nine per cent for the four years since Kharif 2000. The total compensation amounted to Rs. 3 crores.
