Centre may introduce health education in school

KOLAR, NOV. 14. The Union Government is exploring the possibility of introducing health education at the school level, Anbumani Ramdoss, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, has said. He was speaking after inaugurating the new administrative block of Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College here today.

Stating that diseases could be controlled only through proper health education, he hinted that the Union Government would introduce health education at the school level in the coming years. He had held discussions with the Union Human Resource Development Minister and the authorities concerned in this regard.

He appealed to State governments to support the Union Government in its efforts to introduce health education at the school level. He urged educational institutions to organise health awareness programmes.

Referring to the health position in Karnataka, the Union Minister said it was among the five States where AIDS was fast spreading. Urging the State Government to initiate steps to prevent the spread of the disease, he promised that the Centre would provide all assistance in this regard.

N. Dharam Singh, Chief Minister, said the State Government was committed to the welfare of the people. He promised the Union Minister that the State would join hands with the Centre in implementing various health programmes.

Referring to the CET impasse, Mr. Singh urged the Union Government to amend the Constitution to include education in the Ninth Schedule. The State had appealed to the Prime Minister and the Human Resource Development Minister in this regard, he added.

R.L. Jalappa, MP and chairman of the Sri Devaraj Urs Education Trust, V.R. Sudarshan, Chairman of the Legislative Council, and K. Srinivasa Gowda, Agriculture Minister, spoke.
