Prisoners on fast

COIMBATORE Nov.14. Twentyeight prisoners, affiliated to different Hindu organisations, staged a fast in the Central Prison today to condemn the arrest of the Kanchi Acharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswati, in a murder case.

Led by Puri Kamal, a Hindu activist and murder case convict, they protested since this morning demanding steps from the State Government to release the Acharya.

`Consider house arrest'

MADURAI NOV. 14. The Madurai Adheenam today made a plea that the Kanchi Acharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, be kept under house arrest. In a statement, the Adheenam said the police could enquire the Acharya while under house arrest which would be safer.

Lawyers condemn attack

The All-India Lawyers Union (Tamil Nadu State Committee) has sought appropriate action against those responsible for the attack on lawyers on the Madras High Court premises on Saturday when the bail plea of Sri. Jayendra Saraswathi came up for hearing.

Security stepped up

COIMBATORE Nov.14. Security has been stepped up at the Coimbatore Railway Junction following threats reportedly received by the Railway Police that bombs would be planted at stations if the Kanchi Acharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswati, was not released immediately.

The police carried out baggage checks with hand held metal detectors. A door-frame metal detector was also in place.

NMR services to resume

Udhagamandalam Nov. 14. Nilgiris Mountain Railway (NMR) services between Udhagamandalam and Mettupalayam are likely to resume on November 18.

Railway sources said work on repairs to portions of the track damaged by landslips was in progress. The Senior Divisional Operations Manager, Southern Railway, Nagaiah, inspected the track today.

Heavy rain triggered landslips and rolling down of boulders. However, the sources said if there was more rain, restoration of services would be further delayed.

Boy injured in firing

PUDUKOTTAI NOV. 14. A 14-year-old boy on board a mechanised vessel sustained a bullet injury when the Sri Lankan Navy reportedly opened fire at the vessel on Saturday. Sivaraj, hailing from Jagadapattinam, was admitted to the Government Hospital at Manamelkudi.

Police sources here said Sivaraj was accompanying his father Manipal and two other fishermen.

The fishermen were fishing near the international border, when they were fired at.

Ex-lottery dealer's house raided

MADURAI NOV. 14. The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption yesterday conducted searches at the residence, a lodge and office of a former lottery dealer and a real estate owner in the city.

The DVAC Madurai unit led the surprise check in which officials from Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga and Tuticorin participated.

Sources said the search pertained to a case in which certain irregularities were allegedly committed by the officials of Department of Commercial Taxes.

Suicide

ERODE NOV. 14. A 25-year-old man committed suicide by self-immolation on Saturday. According to the police, Senthil of Athani had an affair with his neighbour's wife Janaki (30). Her husband reportedly reprimanded her for this relationship. On Saturday, Senthil came to Janaki's house, poured kerosene over his body and set himself afire. Janaki tried to save him and sustained serious burns. Both were shifted to the hospital, where Senthil died. Janaki is undergoing treatment. The Appakudal police are investigating.

Ramzan prayers

ERODE NOV. 14. Ramzan was celebrated today in Erode district, except Thalawady. The Muslims at Thalawady has decided to celebrate Ramzan on Monday. A special prayer was conducted today in Erode Municipal VOC Park in which about 3,000 Muslims participated. Women held a separate prayer in Karungalpalayam Kamaraj Municipal HSS. Prayers were also held in Dharapuram and Sathyamangalam. Muslims took out a procession in Sathyamangalam. Heavy police pickets were posted near the mosques.

Killed

ERODE NOV. 14. A 40-year-old owner of a finance firm was killed in an accident on Friday. According to the police, Murugesan of Aalampalayam, Dharapuram, was returning from his firm in his motorcycle on Friday night, when a private town bus hit his motorcycle from behind near Chatram bus stop. He died after admission in the Government Hospital, Dharapuram. The Moolanure police registered a case of accident and are investigating.

Four held

ERODE NOV. 14. The Erode Town Police arrested four volunteers of the Revolutionary Youth Front this evening when they attempted to burn the effigy of Sankaracharya of Kanchi Mutt, in Erode Municipal Central Bus Stand.
