Significance of Mahbubnagar

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, NOV. 14. Though Mahbubnagar has been hitting headlines in the wake of the arrest of the Sankaracharya of Kancheepuram, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, on November 11, it is of historical significance for the Mutt.

According to the Mutt sources, it is here the 90th Jayanthi celebrations of the Paramacharya Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi were held.

Mahbubnagar, 90 km from Hyderabad, has its association with another important landmark in the annals of the Mutt: Sri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi visited the place and had a darshan of the Paramacharya under the Ankola tree 21 years ago. The Adi Sankara's "Sivananda Lahari" has a reference to the Ankola tree, they point out.

A Veda Patasala, Goshala and Shiva-Balaji temple built at a cost of Rs.1 crore are functioning under the auspices of the Mutt here. The Acharyas visit this place often, particularly during their journey to Hyderabad.

This year too, pujas and functions related to Deepavali were held as per schedule at Mahbubnagar. The Chandramouleeswara puja is also performed daily by Sri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi here.
