According to the Nedumudy police, the relatives of Ms. Rajan found her dead in her house, Soji Bhavan, Chempumpuram in Kainakary panchayat, at 10 p.m. on November 13. The police said the postmortem examination confirmed that she had consumed poison. The police suspect that Ms. Rajan may have committed suicide as she had been undergoing treatment for back pain for the last several months and was dejected that she could not continue her rowing practice. Ms. Rajan had won two gold medals and two silver medals in rowing in the 2002 national games. She had also participated in the Busan Asian Games. Meanwhile, her neighbours said the family was facing severe financial crisis owing to the expenses incurred on her treatment and medicines. Ms. Rajan's parents are agricultural labourers. The neighbours said her family had spent more than Rs. 1 lakh on her treatment but her condition had not improved after the treatment. They also pointed out that Ms. Rajan had not yet received cash awards totalling Rs. 2.5 lakhs promised by the State Government for her achievements.
