Thanjavur

THANJAVUR, NOV. 14. The police arrested 900 members of the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts when they participated in a rail roko protesting the recent hike in petroleum prices. At Thanjavur, several CPI and CPI(M) leaders, including G. Veeraiyan, former CPI(M) MLA, and N. Srinivasan, district secretary of the CPI(M), were taken into preventive custody. However, 22 cadres managed to board the Thanjavur-Tiruchi Passenger at Tiruchi and organised a roko at Thanjavur station. Jeevakumar, Thanjavur district executive committee member of the CPI(M), and Chidambaram, district secretary of the CPI, who led them, were arrested. The roko was organised at Kumbakonam, Papapanasam, Pattukottai, Peravurani, Adhirampattinam and other places in Thanjavur district.
Tiruvarur
The police arrested 258 persons led by Sivapunniyam, Mannargudi CPI MLA , and Manian, Tiruvarur district secretary of the CPI(M), when they stopped the Karaikaudi-Mayiladuthurai Passenger at 10.30 a.m. At Thiruthuraipoondi, 60 party members, led by G. Palanisamy, Thiruthuraipoondi MLA, who stopped the Mayiladuthurai-Karaikudi Passenger at 10 a.m., were arrested.
Nagapattinam
Nearly 600 members of the CPI and the CPI(M) were taken into custody when they attempted to stage a rail roko at Mayiladuturai and Sirkazhi railway stations when the Cholan Express from Chennai arrived at the stations. They urged the State Government to disburse last year's drought relief to farmers. A large number of cadres staged a demonstration near the bus stand in the morning.
Perambalur
At Ariyalur in Perambalur district, 175 volunteers of the CPI and the CPI (M) were held when they attempted to picket the Guruvayur Express. Led by A. Venugopal and P. Murugesan, district secretaries of the CPI and CPI (M) respectively, they raised slogans against the Central Government, demanding rollback of the rise in the prices of petroleum products. Earlier, they took out a procession from the bus stand to the railway station. The police prevented them from entering the railway station.
Pudukottai
In Pudukottai district, the agitation was staged at two places. A group of the CPI and the CPI (M) cadres squatted for a while in front of the Mayiladuthurai-Karaikudi Passenger at the Aranthangi railway station. They were immediately taken into custody. A total of 115 CPI and CPI(M) cadres, including nine women, led by Rajasekar and Chinnaiah, district secretaries of the CPI and CPI(M) respectively, were taken into preventive custody at the bus stand in Pudukottai.
Tiruchi
As many as 299 cadres, including 34 women, were arrested when they marched towards the railway junction.
M. Selvaraj and G. Rathinavelu, district secretaries of the CPI and the CPI(M) respectively, S. Renuka, city committee secretary of the All India Democratic Women's Association, and G. Iswari, steering committee member of the National Federation of Indian Women, were arrested.
