CHENNAI, NOV. 14. Over 400 stuntmen of the Tamil film industry got themselves insured against medical expenses at the South Indian Stunt Union on Sunday morning after director P. Vasu inaugurated a medical camp organised by Malar Hospital. Actors Vindhya, Vishal and Vignesh dropped in to pay tributes to the spirit of the real heroes behind all the action. Life Insurance Corporation provided a Rs. 1 lakh policy for Mediclaim at a specially discounted premium of Rs.180. "After the injuries on the sets of `Anniyan,' we wanted to do something for the stuntmen who are prone to accidents," says Nandkumar Sundaram of Malar Hospitals. Dr. Sundaram spoke to them about the occupational hazards, preventive measures and the need for insurance. LIC also has a special `risk cover' insurance policy of Rs. 2 lakhs for the stuntmen. A few weeks ago, about 15 stuntmen were injured during the shoot of Shankar's `Anniyan' starring Vikram. In another incident, Shahul Hameed, a stuntman lost his life during the shoot of a Kannada movie starring Vishnuvardhan. The stuntmen also underwent a health check-up at the camp which had pavilions put up by the USV Pharma Company, Novartis and Elder Pharmaceuticals.
