CHENNAI, NOV. 14. The Education Minister, C.Ve. Shanmugham, today said the Government would focus on constructing buildings for district libraries that function from rented premises and would provide them computers with Internet facility. He was speaking at the Connemara Library here after inaugurating the Library Week celebrations. The Government gave a fresh lease of life to libraries with a series of measures aimed at converting them into centres for information. The permanent exhibition was one of the steps. While publishers were able to sell more because of the exhibition, book lovers could find books offered by many publishers under the same roof, he said. The Higher Education Secretary, K. Gnanadesikan, said in 2003-04, the library cess collected was Rs. 38.28 crores. In 2002-03, it was about Rs. 30 crores and in 2001-02, it was Rs. 16 crores. Last year, the Libraries department bought Tamil books worth Rs. 6.5 crores and English books worth Rs. 1.35 crores. This year too, the department bought Tamil books worth Rs. 6.5 crores and English books worth Rs. 2 crores.
