NEW DELHI, NOV. 14. The Human Resource Development Minister, Arjun Singh, today distributed awards to 72 children with exceptional abilities and achievements to mark Children's Day. The awards, for the years 2002 and 2003, have been given to children with outstanding abilities in fields such as academics, culture, arts, sports, music and adventure. Children from all over the country in the age group of four to 14 were eligible for the awards. Two children with the most outstanding achievement were honoured with a cash prize of Rs. 20,000, a certificate and gold medal. Abhijeet Gupta's exceptional ability in chess earned him this award for the year 2002. He is from Rajasthan. The 2003 award in this category went to Sachin Dattatreya Vetkoli from Maharashtra for his outstanding performance in the field of computers. Mr. Arjun Singh asked the children to emulate the life of Jawaharlal Nehru who had made sacrifices by spending 14 years in jail to attain freedom from the colonial yoke. The Minister of State for HRD, Kanti Singh, also participated in the function.
