'Acharya deserves better treatment'

By Our Staff Correspondent

NEW DELHI, NOV. 15 . Lama Lobzang, member of the National Commission for the Scheduled Tribes, has described as deplorable the timing and manner of the arrest of the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi.

In a statement issued here today, Mr. Lobzang said that the law should indeed take its own course, but in this it was not necessary to humiliate the seer and hurt the sentiments of a large number of Hindus all over the world by treating him as an ordinary criminal. The Acharya could have been detained at his own Mutt or in a guesthouse with restrictions on visitors, if necessary.

He certainly deserved a better treatment by the authorities concerned due to his stature and reputation, Mr. Lobzang said.
