THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 15. The CPI(M) State secretary, Pinarayi Vijayan, has demanded an urgent and comprehensive investigation into the `flaws' in the treatment given to Shaari S. Nair, the victim in the Kiliroor sex racket case, who died on Saturday. In a statement here today, Mr. Vijayan said the investigation should be carried out by a team comprising nationally renowned medical professionals. Since there were several individuals and vested interests that did not want the girl to survive, the police should investigate whether they had interfered with the treatment procedures and register cases for culpable homicide against the accused. The sex racket victim had given birth to a girl child at the Kottayam Medical College Hospital on August 15, 2004. The girl was shifted to a private hospital after she developed post-delivery infection. The girl had sustained a cut injury in her intestine while under treatment at the private hospital and her condition deteriorated. However, she was shifted back to the medical college hospital only after her condition became critical. This being the case, any independent observer would concede that a comprehensive investigation was necessary to see whether the girl had died because of the way she was treated, Mr. Vijayan said. He regretted the police's failure to nab the key players in the racket even after a family of four had perished earlier at Kaviyoor in connection with it.
