KOZHIKODE, NOV. 15. The Coordination Committee of Motor Workers Unions affiliated to all political parties has decided to postponed its dawn-to-dusk strike in the State from November 17 to November 24. The strike call had been given to protest against the steep hike in the prices of petroleum products by the Centre. A meeting of various union leaders at the CITU office here this evening decided to postpone the strike by a week in view of the difficulties experienced by the people of the State. In fact the Kerala State Private Bus Operators Federation had threatened to launch an indefinite bus strike from November 24. Kerala had witnessed two hartals in less than 10 days. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had called a hartal last Monday against the hike in petroleum products, the Hindu Aikya Vedi organised a hartal today to protest against the arrest of the Sankaracharya of Kanchi, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, who is now lodged in the Vellore Central prison. The trade union leaders said that the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, had also requested them to give him a little more time to sort out the issue arising out of the hike in the rates of diesel and petrol. The CITU State secretary Elamaram Kareem, the Private Motor Thozhilali Union (AITUC) general secretary, K.M. Kuttikrishnan and others participated in the meeting.
