Integrating theory and practice in management

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, NOV. 15. A network of professional management faculty and students based in the United States — the Sigma Iota Epsilon (SIE) — is opening its first overseas chapter in the city.

The move will help MBA students of Jaya Engineering College at Tiruninravur to interact regularly with faculty members, students and researchers in various disciplines of management studies in 64 chapters in the United States, and work on international collaborative projects. Addressing media persons today, the Jaya Educational Trust's vice chairman, K. Navaraj, said the SIE was an honorary, professional fraternity. It seeks to encourage and recognise scholastic excellence and to promote cooperation between the academic and practical aspects of management. It functions from the Colorado State University (http://sienational.colostate.edu) with an executive board of eminent academicians across the U.S.

"Jaya School of Business is the first institution outside the U.S to join this network," Mr. Navaraj said.

The school's director, S.R. Pandian, said that in an era of globalisation, management students required more than an academic curriculum. They need to know the different and emerging management practices, the ways in which costing, production, product lifecycles and marketing strategies were evolving at a global level.

"Our SIE chapter would reach out to national and international level scholars, research institutions, organise activities to promote exchange of ideas and projects," he added.

S. Jayapandian, professor of management, said even engineering students of Jaya Engineering could benefit from the programme by becoming members of the SIE. "Slowly we will move to faculty and student exchange for research and study," he added. The SIE chapter will be formally launched in the city on Wednesday.
