Don't pre-judge

Sir, — Even a game of cricket is alive till the last ball is bowled. But in the case of the Acharya, some people have already decided that he is guilty.

Is it not presumptuous to say the Acharya resorted to murder to silence someone when his position was not even under any remote threat? And would he, if he did, leave such gaping holes as claimed by the police, in the `plot'?

S. Kannan,
Harborne, Birmingham

Sir, — After the murder, a few persons confess to the crime. Later they say they were given Rs.50,000 to do so. Then a few more confess to the crime. Then they implicate the Kanchi seer. The main evidence is the numbers recorded in a mobile phone.

The conclusion is that the seer was in touch with the murderers and made calls from the phone thus providing evidence that will lead straight to him. Only in films do such things happen.

G. Ganesan,

Sir, — Though the arrest of the Acharya has evoked strong reactions, it is heartening to note that no one has resorted to self-immolation or destruction of public property to vent their feelings, unlike the so-called rationalists.

Sir, — The frisking of devotees and Mutt employees by the police is humiliating. It is a traditional, renowned institution held in high esteem by Hindus worldwide.

Sir, — If the seer is innocent, he will derive more reverence from his followers; if not, none should mind his suffering the consequences of his actions.

Yet the fact remains that the police would never have apprehended a respected religious leader of any other community the way they did Sri Jayendra Saraswathi and that too on a holy day.

Noida, U.P.
