Officials told to end atrocities on Dalits

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE, NOV. 16. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, has instructed the Deputy Commissioners of the districts to visit the places from where complaints of atrocities and injustice against Dalits are being received and take corrective action. Speaking to a delegation from the Dalit Sangharsh Samiti, Mr. Dharam Singh also warned the officials of disciplinary action if they failed to go to the aid of Dalits in cases of complaints of atrocities. Senior officials were present on the occasion. The samiti said that the State Government should impress on the Centre to amend the Constitution to provide for internal reservation in the list of Scheduled Castes in the light of the Supreme Court judgment striking down such a scheme of reservation. It complained that middlemen and contractors were exploiting the city cleaning workers, and said the civic bodies should allot the contracts for city cleaning to associations of workers and that social welfare institutions should be taken out of the purview of the zilla panchayats.
