State-level science fair in Gulbarga

By Our Special Correspondent

GULBARGA, NOV. 16. A State-level science fair will be held in Shahabaz English Medium School here for four days from November 21. The city is hosting the fair for the first time.

The Deputy Commissioner, Anjum Parvez, who chaired a preparatory meeting with officials of the District Science Centre, said over 400 children and 200 teachers from 32 educational districts would participate in the event. Six science models selected in each district-level fair would be displayed and a panel of judges would select 40 prize-winning models in different categories. The participating teachers would display a model each.

He said the prize-winners would participate in the South India-level science fair. If they made the grade in that event too, the next stop was the national-level fair.

Themes

The main theme of the State-level fair is "Recent trends in science and technology'' with the sub- themes being agriculture, energy and its conservation, industrial development and environment, educational technology, mathematical modelling, and health and technology.

Inauguration

Mr. Parvez said the district administration had decided to invite the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, to inaugurate the fair. The State-level fair would be preceded by the three-day district-level event for high-school children from Thursday at the Vyaktitva Vikas Education Society's Kannada Convent School. Shashil G. Namoshi, MLC, would inaugurate the event.

On Friday, experts such as E.R. Ekbote of Gulbarga University, B.K. Chalgeri, honorary president of the District Science Committee and Veena of the Government polytechnic would evaluate the models. Prizes would be given on the concluding day.

He said that the Directorate of State Education Research and Training, Bangalore, would host a seminar on "Popularisation of science'' for the winners of the district-level event.
