LONDON: George Galloway, the controversial MP who was expelled from the Labour Party for urging British troops in Iraq not to fight an "illegal'' war, has sued The Daily Telegraph for publishing a series of reports last year alleging that he received bribes from the former Iraqi President, Saddam Hussein, and used a charity as a front for his dealings with the erstwhile Iraqi intelligence service. In lively exchanges, which marked the start of the court hearings at the High Court, Mr. Galloway described the allegations as a "deeply wounding dagger through my political heart''. He said the documents on which the reports were based "may be forged, may be doctored, but are in any case wrong and false. I would ask that the court recognise that the Telegraph did not act responsibly in publishing the allegations it did about me in the manner it did. These highly damaging allegations have caused my reputation severe damage, which needs to be restored. I cannot recognise, nor can I remember, more serious allegations being made against a politician,'' he said. The newspaper claims that the documents were found by one of its correspondents amid the rubble of the Iraqi Foreign Ministry after the U.S.-led invasion, and that it decided to publish them in public interest. It does not claim that they were authentic.
