KOPPAL, NOV. 16. Members of the Raichur istrict unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party staged a rasta roko at the Ashoka Circle in Koppal town on Tuesday in protest against the arrest of Sri Jayendra Saraswathi of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham by the Tamil Nadu Police on November 11. As many as 30 activists, led by Manjunath Hallikeri, President of the city unit of the party, gathered at the Ashoka Circle at about 10.30 a.m. and blocked vehicular traffic for nearly one hour.
Condemned
Babu Rao, General Secretary of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (Kisan Cell), has condemned the arrest of Sri Jayendra Saraswathi. In a statement here today, he said the Tamil Nadu Police arrested the Acharya on the behest of the Jayalalithaa Government. There was no doubt that the Acharya would have cooperated with the police.
`Withdraw case'
The Raichur district unit of the Akhila Karnataka Brahmana Maha Sabha has demanded that the Tamil Nadu Government withdraw the case registered against Sri Jayendra Saraswathi and release him from jail. In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, H.V. Parsvanath, today, the sabha urged the President to intervene in the matter and initiate action for the immediate release of the Acharya.
`Plan to weaken Hindus'
Our Mangalore Staff Correspondent reports: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad has condemned the arrest of the Kanchi Sankaracharya by the Tamil Nadu Police. In a public meeting here today, the swamijis of various maths and the VHP district leaders described the arrest as an effort to weaken the majority community. The Vibhag Sanchalak of the VHP, M.B. Puranik, said the charge of murder was foisted on the swamiji in an effort to malign his clean and unquestionable past. Eesha Vittaldasa Swamiji of Kemaru Math, Rajashekaranandaji Swamiji of Uppinagodu Math and Ramananda Swamiji of Kolya Math, the Bajrang Dal leader, Praveen Valke, Gopal Kuthar, Raju Kulal and Prasad Attavar spoke.
Procession
Our Sirsi Correspondent reports: A large number of people participated in the protest against the arrest of the Kanchi Sankaracharya here today. The protest was organised by the Swarnavalli Mahasamsthana and the local units of the Bajrang Dal, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, and the Bharatiya Janata Party. In Yellapur, a bandh call in this connection evoked good response, according to reports reaching Sirsi. A procession was taken out.
`Release seer'
Our Kolar Correspondent reports: A procession was taken out here today in protest against the arrest of the Kanchi Acharya. Members of the Dharma Samrakshana Samithi took out the procession seeking the unconditional release of the seer. K. Prahlada Rao, vice-president of the Akhila Karnataka Brahmana Mahasabha, T.A. Iyer, president of Kolar Taluk Brahmana Sangha, A.M. Srinivas, former councillor of the Kolar City Municipal Council, Sama Prasanna of the BJP, D.G. Subramani of the Youth Congress and K.R. Ramasubbu of the RSS, spoke. A memorandum was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, G.N. Nayak.
Effigy burnt
Our Chamarajanagar correspondent reports: Members of the Bramhin Yuva Vedike and the Vipra Kriya Samithi took out a procession here today in protest against the arrest of the swamiji. The members of the Vipra Kriya Samithi burnt an effigy of the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, at the Bhuvaneshwari Circle for his stand in the matter. They formed "human chain" at the circle.

Our Hassan Staff Correspondent reports: Activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Madhava Murthy, took out a procession in Banavara hobli of Arsikere taluk today in protest agai-nst the arrest of the Sankaracharya.
