Kanaka Jayanti this month

Bangalore Nov. 16. The State Employees and Labourers Centre of the Kanaka Samithi will celebrate Kanakadasa Jayanti on November 29 at the Ravindra Kalakshetra here. The former Minister and President of the Centre, H.M. Revanna, told presspersons that the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, would inaugurate the "Kanakautsava". The Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, would preside over it. As part of the celebrations, there would be discussions on four topics — "Dasa tradition and Kanakadasa", "Kanakadasa's social perception", "Kanakadasa and Nativity", and "Religion, Politics and Kanakadasa". There would be a cultural programme featuring folk arts. Mr. Revanna said the Government had declared a restricted holiday on November 29. On the controversy relating to the "Kanaka gopura" in Udupi, Mr. Revanna said the Kuruba community would discuss the issue and then make its stand known. The "gopura", which was demolished some months ago by the Sri Krishna Math, Udupi, is being rebuilt.

12 hurt in group clash

HASSAN NOV. 16. As many as 12 persons were injured in a group clash on Tuesday in Jaandal village of Holenarsipur taluk, according to reports reaching here. Eleven of the injured have been admitted to the Sri Chamarajendra District Hospital here, while the other was shifted to Bangalore, according to the police. They have all suffered head injuries. According to the Holenarsipur Town Police, who have registered a case in this connection, a feud between the families of Anwar Khan and Mohmammd Khan is the reason for the clash. There was a minor scuffle between the family members on Tuesday and they attacked each other with machetes and clubs today. Cases have been booked by the Holenarsipur Town Police.

Woman, child end life

HASSAN NOV. 16. Kalamma (65), allegedly committed suicide along with her granddaughter, Deepu (6), by jumping into the village tank in Bananakatte of Channarayapatna taluk on Monday, as she was unable to repay a debt of Rs. 29,000 borrowed from the Primary Land Development Bank for buying cattle. According to the police, she had received a notice from the bank in this connection.

Congress to resume protest

TUMKUR NOV. 16. The Congress will resume its agitation in Kunigal in Tumkur district on Wednesday against the reduction in the release of water into the Hemavathy Tumkur Canal. The party leaders and workers and farmers blocked traffic on National Highway 48 and State Highway 33 at Kunigal on November 10 in protest against the reduction of release of water into the canal from 1,200 cusecs to 700 cusecs. They withdrew their protest after the Government decided to increase the quantity of water release and to ensure its flow to the tail end of the canal, Kunigal Doddakere, in five days. The president of the Tumkur District Congress Committee and former Kunigal MLA, S.P. Muddahanume Gowda, said, in a press release here on Tuesday, that the Government had failed to keep its words. The party was constrained to resume the protest.

Main accused in Dyapalapura case arrested By Our Staff Correspondent

HASSAN NOV. 16. The Hassan district police have arrested Tyaga alias Tyagaraja (37) of Harunvanahalli, who is the main accused in the Dyapalapura incident. In a release here on Tuesday, the Superintendent of Police, Panduranga Rane, said the police arrested Tyagaraja from his relatives' place in Savasihalli of Belur taluk. The police were searching for Tyaga in connection with the attack on the people of Dyapalapura who were travelling in a bus near Soppinhalli and the murder of Venkatesh, a resident of Haruvanahalli in 1998.

With the arrest of Tyaga, the number of arrests in connection with the double murder and the subsequent incident in Dyapalapura had gone up to 29, he said. Mr. Rane also appealed to the villagers of Dyapalapura who have left the village, to return to their village, as except two persons involved in the double murder, the others had been arrested.

Revision of electoral rolls

Bidar Nov. 16. The revision of electoral rolls in Basavakalyan taluk will start from Wednesday. Those who will complete 18 years of age by January 1, 2005 can apply to get their names added to the list. People whose names have been left out of the voters' list can also apply.

Application forms are available at all polling booths and the tahsildar's office, a press release from the tahsildar, Mallanna Hosmani, said.

Raichur Nov.16. Sri Raghavendra Swamy Math, Mantralayam, has organised a three-day "Vijayadasara Aradhana Mahotsava" from Friday here at the Jawaharnagar Raghavendra Swamy Math.

A procession of the portrait of Vijayadasaru will be taken out at 5 p.m. on Thursday from Mungli Pranadevara Temple to Jawaharnagar Raghavendra Swamy Math. Later, Pandit Suswaram Nagarajacharya Adoni will speak about Vijayadasaru. Sri Shushameendra Teertha Swamiji, seer of Sri Raghavendra Swamy Math, will release Sri Vijayavaibhava, a composition of Vijayadasara Suladigalu.

Inauguration

Bidar Nov. 16. The students' wing of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. (IEEE) will be inaugurated at Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College in Bidar on Saturday. Surendra Pal, Deputy Director of the ISRO and chairman of IEEE Bangalore; Balbir Singh, chairman of the college; Pritam Singh, director; and B.S. Dhaliwal, principal; will be present.

T. Srinivas from the Indian Institute of Science and chairman of the IEEE technical activities cell will deliver a lecture on "Optical Communication." The students' wing will give students an opportunity to meet and learn from faculty members and professionals in the field through activities such as seminars, conferences and workshops, a release said.

Conference

MANGALORE NOV. 16. The three-day 29th National Conference of the Indian Society of Periodontology will start in Mangalore on Thursday. B.V. Samayaji, chairman of the organising committee, told presspersons here on Tuesday that over 550 delegates were expected to attend the conference. About 130 scientific papers will be presented. The conference will be preceded by a course to be conducted by Nicholas Amigoni from Chicago, U.S. S. Ramanand Shetty, Director of Medical Education, will inaugurate the conference.

Lecture series

MANGALORE NOV. 16. The Dr. K. Shivaram Karanth Chair, Mangalore University, has organised a series of lectures on the environment for high school students of Kannada-medium schools in Mangalore, Padubidri, Puttur, Bantwal and Belthangady from Friday. A press release from the Director of the Chair, Sabeeha, here on Tuesday said the 10 lectures in the first series would go on till December 3 and cover various topics on the environment. He said the Chair proposed to organise 20 lectures in all on the topic. Experts had been invited to deliver the lectures.

Sahasranama

MANGALORE NOV. 16. The Chinmaya Mission will organise "Lalitha Sahasranama Koti Archana" in its premises at Sharada Samvidyalaya in Hoige Bazaar from December 1 to 15. The archana will be performed daily in four batches at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 4.30 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. Each batch will have 100 participants. Those interested can register in person at the Chinmaya Mission, Sharada Sannidhi, Hoige Bazaar (ph: 2446158). Sri Lalitha Homa will be performed on December 15.

`Fill vacancies'

Bidar Nov. 16. The Karnataka Veterinary Unemployed Postgraduates' Action Committee has urged the Government to fill vacant posts of probationary assistant directors immediately.

The committee's reaction has come close on the heels of the Minister for Animal Husbandry, Mirajuddin Patel's statement that the Government had started the process of directly filling nearly 6,000 vacant posts. The committee has said that the last appointments were made in 1995.

Graduates and postgraduates in veterinary sciences were losing out on opportunities as the State Government had fixed the ratio of promotees to direct recruits at 90:10.

The Government had also cancelled all special benefits granted to postgraduates and Ph.D. holders working as assistant directors. The president of the committee, Shivsharana Yalagond, said in a release that if this continued, the committee would be forced to begin a Statewide agitation.

Cancer clinic

MYSORE Nov. 16. A free cancer detection clinic will be conducted at Preethi Cancer Centre on Mahatma Gandhi Road Road at Lakshmipuram in the city from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday.

Patients suffering from abnormal bleeding, swelling, lump, hardness, ulcer, sore throat, or difficulty in swallowing for more than a month, have been advised to come for a check-up. The proprietor of Gayathri Enterprises, a pharmaceutical firm, K.V. Prakash, is conducting the clinic in association with Bharath Cancer Hospital. For more details, call 5259259.

Petrol price

MYSORE Nov. 16. The price of petrol has been reduced by Rs 1.30 in Mysore following the revision of prices by the Union Government. The price of petrol is now Rs. 43.97 a litre.

Wildlife training

MYSORE Nov. 16. The Mysore zoo is organising a two-day training programme for teachers from December 3 on the zoo premises to impart knowledge about wildlife and create an awareness among students about the importance of zoos.

In a press release, the executive director of the zoo, said that interested teachers could obtain the enrolment forms from the zoo office and submit them by November 29.
