The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, garlanding the statue of Sankarambadi Sundarachari in Tirupati on Tuesday. The TUDA Chairman, B. Karunakar Reddy, and the MLA, M. Venkataramana, are also seen.
TIRUPATI, NOV. 16. The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, unveiled the bronze icon of Sankarambadi Sundarachari at Annapurneswari circle on Tiruchanur road here on Tuesday. At a brief programme organised by the Tirupati Urban Development Authority (TUDA) that lasted ten minutes, Dr. Reddy also named the road after the great poet. The Chief Minister heaped rich encomiums on the famed son of Tirupati for penning an eternal song -- Maa Telugu Thalliki.. "Paying tributes to him means honouring ourselves," he said.
State anthem
Dr. Reddy also declared the song as the State anthem, saying the song " is to the State is as Jana Gana Mana is to the country''. In the same breath, he referred to Sundarachari as "Andhra Tagore'', citing his composition "Gitanjali'', a true translation of Ravindranath Tagore's work by the same name. "Despite his personal sufferings, he spent his entire life for the cause of literature and finally died a pauper.'' The Chief whip, N. Kirankumar Reddy, the TUDA Chairman, B. Karunakar Reddy, the Municipal Chairman, K. Sankar Reddy, MLAs -- M. Venkataramana (Tirupati), R. Chenga Reddy (Nagari) and Nelavala Subramanyam (Sullurpet) accorded a warm welcome to YSR. The district collector, S.S. Rawat and TUDA vice-chairman, M. Srirangachary were among the officials present. Later, the Chief Minister proceeded to Bangalore in his official chopper from the makeshift helipad developed near Urban Haat.
