Maoist leader surrenders

By Our Correspondent

ADILABAD, NOV. 16. The deputy commander of the Communist Party of India (Maoist), Indervelli dalam, Degam Mohan alias Mahender, 20, surrendered before the district police on Tuesday. The extremist cited reasons of failing health, disillusionment with party ideology and intention to serve his parents and join the mainstream.

He is the 19th extremist to have surrendered this year and the ninth after peace talks were initiated by the State Government with naxalites.

Producing Mohan at a press conference, the Adilabad Superintendent of Police, Kripa Nand Tripathi Ujela, said Mohan worked as an agricultural labourer before dropping out of class VII in his native village of Madanapalli in Khanapur mandal.

Attracted by songs

Attracted to revolutionary songs of naxalites who visited his village, he joined the People's War Singapur dalam in May 2002. Initially, he carried the luggage of dalam members. After a 15-day training in Gangapur forests of Utnoor mandal, he was shifted to Indervelli where he worked for six months.

In 2003 he served as gunman to the North Telangana special zone committee secretary, Pulluri Prasad Rao alias Chandranna, before being elevated as the deputy commander of Indervelli dalam in July 2004.

The extremist was involved in five offences including killing of Gade Gouraiah in Bejjur mandal in 2003, exchange of fire at Narwaipet in 2003 and blasting of Khanapur MPP office the same year.

Replying to questions, Mohan said four new recruits had joined the Indervelli dalam recently. The SP said efforts would be made to rehabilitate the surrendered extremist.

He also appealed to naxalities, who were still under ground, to surrender and lead peaceful lives as the Government would rehabilitate them.
