CHANDIGARH, NOV.16. The Haryana Chief Minister, Om Prakash Chautala, has directed the State Irrigation Department to speed up cleaning of canals as well as construction and repair of water courses. Reviewing the ongoing projects of the Irrigation Department at a meeting here, he directed that the work to enhance the capacity of Sudkhau distributary and its off-takes be also speeded up. Mr.Chautala said that theft of canal water should be checked so that irrigation water could reach the tail-ends. The Chief Minister, who also reviewed the working of the Public Health Department, directed the concerned officers to ensure that wherever the waterworks were constructed, proper water supply should be made available to the people. It was informed that 1,000 new tubewells had been installed to improve the supply of drinking water. And Rs.99 crores had been received from NABARD to further improve the supply of drinking water. Also, Rs.2.7 crores had been sanctioned by the Shivalik Development Board to improve the supply of drinking water in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of the Board. Mr.Chautala, who also presided over a review meeting of the Public Works (Building and Roads) Department, directed the officers to complete the repair and construction of roads in rural areas on priority basis. Meanwhile, the Haryana Government has decided to remodel the Gurgaon water supply scheme, at a cost of Rs.73 crores, to increase its capacity from the existing 135.40 cusecs to 320 cusecs. This was approved by Mr.Chautala in view of the increasing demand of raw water for the fast developing town of Gurgaon and the Industrial Model Township of Manesar as well as the industrial townships being developed by the Haryana State Industrial Development Corporation in Gurgaon district. Also, the groundwater sources were not adequately available to meet the growing demand for water and the capacity of the existing channel would be increased by 185 cusecs.
