Tirunelveli
By Our Staff Reporter
TIRUNELVELI, NOV.16. Much to the elation of farmers, public and officials, the widespread torrential rain, which lashed the district continuously for the past one week, stopped today, bringing the floods in the Tamiraparani and other areas under control. Since most of the tanks in Tirunelveli, Palayamkottai, Ambasamudhram, Tenkasi, Alangulam, Kadayam, Kalakkad, Cheranmahadevi are almost full now, the farmers prayed for a break in the rain at least for the next 15 days, so that they could use the water for irrigation. As there was no rain in the catchment areas also, the storage level of the Papanasam and Servalar dams remained unchanged. Hence, the combined discharge from the dams, which stood at 9,600 cusecs on Monday, came down to 3,000 cusecs today. The rainfall in the catchment areas of the Manimuthar dam also came down drastically, as the inflow lowered from yesterday's 9,000 cusecs to 2,000 cusecs today. The level in the Manimuthar dam stood at 113.60 feet this evening and there was no discharge. However, a team of officials led by the Executive Engineer, PWD (Irrigation), T. Shanmugasundaram, visited various irrigation tanks in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts today to inspect the condition of the water sources in the wake of a huge discharge from the Papanasam and Servalar reservoirs on Monday. The massive release of water from the dams inundated Vazhukkodai and the bridge connecting Melapalayam and Tirunelveli last night. Since the police had already been deployed on the viaduct, anticipating flood, traffic was stopped on this stretch. Nearly 250 houses at Kailasapuram, Meenakshipuram, Sindhupoondurai, which experienced the first floods of the season last week, were once again marooned last night due to this release of water. The floods also surrounded some of the houses at Kurunthudayarpuram near Kokkirakulam.
