No objection to NDFB talks with Centre, says Gogoi

By Sushanta Talukdar

GUWAHATI, NOV. 16 . The Assam Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi, announced today that the State Government has no objection to the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) holding direct talks with the Centre.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Gogoi said that his Government would not stand in the way of peace talks with the NDFB as it sincerely wanted peace to return to the State.

Mr. Gogoi was reacting to a statement by the NDFB on Sunday ruling out any talks with the State Government and also insisting that the outfit would hold talks only with the Centre.

The State Government has been awaiting certain information for proceeding with the formalities of signing a ceasefire agreement with the militant outfit. The NDFB spokesman, S. Sanjarang, in his statement urged the Centre not to equate NDFB with the erstwhile Bodo Liberation Tigers (BLT) and ask the State Government to initiate talks with it. He also ruled out any talks on the same modalities as were adopted during the talks with the BLT. The BLT had signed a Bodo Accord following a series of tripartite talks with the Centre and the State.
