Naresh made BJP State general secretary

HYDERABAD: The film actor and former president of the BJP youth wing, K. Naresh Kumar, who is the in-charge of Ananatapur district, has been appointed the party's State general secretary. This was announced here on Tuesday by the State president, N. Indrasena Reddy, according to a press release.

Sainik school entrance test on January 9

VIZIANAGARAM: Entrance examination for admission to classes VI and XI in Sainik school, Korukonda (Vizianagaram district), will be held on January 9 in Guntur, Hyderabad, Tirupati, Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram.

Boys born between July 2, 1994 and July 1, 1995 are eligible for admission to class VI and boys born between July 2, 1991 and July 1, 1992 for class IX.

Application forms and prospectus can be obtained from the Principal, Sainik school, Korukonda, either directly from the office counter or by sending a crossed SBI demand draft for Rs. 375 (Rs. 275 for SCs and STs) payable at SBI, Sainik school, Korukonda branch, in favour of the Principal, Sainik school, Korukonda, along with a self-addressed envelope without postage on or before December 11, 2004. The last date for submission of applications is December 11, 2004, according to a release.

Tribals protest against

killing of teachers

KHAMMAM: Tribals on Tuesday laid siege to the Government offices at Kunta, a divisional headquarters town of Chhattisgarh (3 km away from the Khammam village of Chatti) protesting against the killing of two teachers and a student in an encounter between the police and the Maoists near Gollapalli in South Bastar few days ago.

Starvation death of woman?

NELLORE: A handloom worker, K. Venkatamma, died at Sangam in the district on Monday reportedly due to starvation. Owing to lack of work she had to `face starvation' often which was said to be the cause of her death.

Somasekhara panel sittings

HYDERABAD: The B.K. Somasekhara Commission of Enquiry looking into the Yeleru scam will hold its preliminary sittings here on November 24 and 25 between 11.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. at its head office. Persons who have already been notified, witnesses examined during the enquiry and others interested can appear in person or through duly authorised agents, including advocates. They can make submissions either in written or in oral.

According to an official release, persons intending to submit written statements/documents are to send them in advance to the commission, second floor, National Hydrology Project Office, opposite Government Degree College, Chaintalbasti, Khairatabad, Hyderabad.

75 delegates from State for AIDWA meet

HYDERABAD: Seventy-five delegates from the State would attend the five-day conference of All-India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) beginning at Bhubaneshwar on November 17. They left for the Orissa capital on Tuesday, K. Swaroopa Rani, general secretary, State unit of AIDWA, said in a press release on Tuesday.

TDP activist murdered

KURNOOL: A Telugu Desam activist, Prabhudas (50), was hacked to death at Biravole village in Rudravaram mandal of Kurnool district on Tuesday. According to reports, Prabhudas was attacked by seven persons with sickles and was done to death.

Additional `deepam' connections

HYDERABAD: About two lakh additional LPG (Deepam) connections are likely to become available in lieu of unutilised ones among the 5,38,600 allocations made during 2004-05. The number is based on reports received from Collectors about non-lifting of refills by the beneficiaries since the first release of gas connections. The unutilised connections will be allotted to those who are in need of such connections for regular consumption, according to Bhanwar lal, Ex-officio Secretary, Civil Supplies.

Commonwealth Parliamentary conference begins today

Hyderabad: About 120 delegates are expected to take part in the first India Asia regions Commonwealth Parliamentary Associations conference to be held here from November 17 to 22. Addressing media here on Tuesday, the Speaker, K.R. Suresh Reddy, said that while three delegates from each of the State Assemblies were participating, an official from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Secretariat, London, would also be present. Mr. Reddy said that G. Kuthuhalamma, N. Manohar and Y. Ramakrishnudu, all MLAs, would consist of the State delegation.

Onion, tomato price situation reviewed

KURNOOL: The Commissioner for Marketing, D.V.S.N. Murthy, reviewed the prices of onion and tomato here on Tuesday in the wake of falling prices for the two commodities in the market. Mr. Murthy told reporters that the price of onion was around Rs. 350 per quintal, which was considered reasonable.

Livestock Week

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Tuesday launched `Pasuganabhivridhi varotsavalu', during which animal health camps and extensive publicity campaigns will be organised by the Andhra Pradesh Livestock Development Agency.

Dr. Reddy released a multi-colour poster and a brochure to mark the launch of the week-long celebrations.

Rise in minimum temperature

Hyderabad: Weather remained dry in the State on Tuesday except light rain in Nizamabad and Visakhapatnam districts.

Minimum temperatures rose at many places in coastal Andhra and Telangana and changed a little in Rayalaseema. The lowest night temperature for the 24 hours ending Tuesday morning was recorded by Anantapur and Nandyal at 19 degree Celsius. Isolated rain in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema has been forecast for Wednesday while weather will be dry in Telangana.

Sand seized

KURNOOL: The District Panchayat Officer (DPO), Sobha Swarooparani, seized five tractors which were transporting sand illegally from the Tungabhadra river bed here on Tuesday. The tractors were surrendered to the police. Sand extraction was allowed only at six points above Sunkesula barrage in the district. However, some people were extracting sand from Panchalingala and Munagalapadu near Kurnool.

Relay fast

KURNOOL: Ten RSS activists, led by the Regional president, N.D.Y. Ramamurthy, launched relay fast at Sankar Mutt here on Tuesday demanding unconditional release of Kanchi seer, Jayendra Saraswathi. The RSS leaders, Narasimha Murthy, and others took part.

Nagulachaviti celebrated

NELLORE: Nagulachaviti, the festival of snake-god, was celebrated with religious fervour here on Tuesday. Women offered prayers at identified spots in Mulapet, Kotturu, Nawapet, Trunk Road and other places. Earlier, the civic authorities cleaned the spots and provided shamianas for the convenience of devotees.

One more dies of gastroenteritis

NELLORE: Gastroenteritis has claimed one more life in Annamedu village of Naidupet. Ten other affected persons were admitted to hospitals of the area. Despite all efforts taken to create an awareness on environment and sanitation, the lack of water is proving to be the main bottleneck in these areas. Due to severe shortage of water, villagers are forced to dig pits under the taps and to consume dirty water.

13 injured in accident

NELLORE: Thirteen persons were injured following a collision between an RTC bus and a lorry near Baddevolu village of Manubolu mandal on Monday night. While the bus was proceeding to Tirupati from Eluru, the lorry was coming from Chennai. All the injured were admitted to hospitals.

Registration of wells

NELLORE: The authorities of the District Water Management Agency, Nellore, have advised that every owner of a well has to compulsorily register the details in Form-I. These registrations are done by the municipalities in towns and panchayat secretaries in village panchayats. The registrations are done free as against a registration fees of Rs. 10 fixed earlier.

Press Day celebrated

NELLORE: The National Press Day was celebrated under the auspices of the district unit of Dalit Vidyarthi Sena.

In his address, the president of the Sena, A. Poorna Prakash, said journanlists were a link between people and the Government, helping to find a suitable solution to various problems confronted by different sections of society. He pleaded for provision of better facilities for journalists. M. Nagamalla Reddy, a Headmaster, functionary of Arundhateeya employees association, K. Subba Rao, Rev. T. Dayanandam and others spoke on the occasion.

Dharna staged

CUDDAPAH: Farmers of Karamaravaripalle village staged dharna before the Jammalamadugu MRO office on Tuesday demanding Government assistance to them as standing crop on nearly 3,000 acres was withering.

A former sarpanch, Pulla Reddy, and vice-sarpanch, M.N. Bayyapu Reddy, said cotton, sunflower, chilli and bengal gram crops in an extent of 3,000 acres were withering away, due to ground water depletion and borewells not yielding water. They sought disbursal of crop insurance and payment of compensation for crop losses. sThe farmers later went in a rally to the Rayalaseema Grameena Bank branch and lamented that they were deprived of crop insurance despite payment of premia.

Official suspended

KARIMNAGAR: The Collector, C. Parthasarathi, has suspended the Eligaid Mandal Educational Officer (MEO), M.A Hameed, for dereliction of duties and allegedly swindling wages of Vidya volunteers. In a press note here today, the Collector said that the MEO had allegedly siphoned off the wages of Vidya Volunteers and the increment arrears of the attenders. Based on a report submitted by the Peddapalli deputy DEO, the Collector suspended the MEO as well as instructed the authorities to take necessary measures for the recovery of the swindled amount.

Workshop held

Nizamabad: As part of its child healthcare week celebrations, the Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP) here on Tuesday, organised a workshop on `New Born Care and Resuscitation'' at Alla Sarojanamma Nursing School. A noted Paediatrician, A. Lakshma Reddy, counselled over 100 teenagers and explained about the problems being faced by teenage girls at educational institutions and workplaces. The IAP district general secretary, N. Ramchander and a Paediatrician, K. Srisailam conducted the workshop.

Award for KU professor

WARANGAL: The International Institute of Education and Management, New Delhi, has conferred `Jewel of India award' on Prof. K. Rajeshwar Rao of the Kakatiya University. Prof. Rao was selected in recognition of his services in the field of education. He had put in over 30 years of service in the university in various capacities. He was the head of department of Business and Management. The award will be presented to him on December 15 to be held at New Delhi.

Loans for DWCRA groups

ADILABAD: The Adilabad District Collector, J. Sudha Rani, and the Nirmal MLA, A. Indrakaran Reddy, on Tuesday disbursed cheques worth Rs. 3,000 each totalling up to Rs. 66.88 lakh to DWCRA group members of Nirmal constituency for setting up petty businesses. Ms. Sudha Rani suggested dairying as a profitable venture. Mr. Indrakaran Reddy said the Government was in the process of sanctioning fertilizers to farmers worth Rs. 1.13 crore. The DRDA Project Director, Gopi, and other officials attended.
