Panel on factory revival to meet today

By Our Special Correspondent

GULBARGA, NOV. 16. The first meeting of the expert committee constituted by the State Government to suggest ways to revive the Aland Cooperative Sugar Factory will be held at the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Wednesday.

The Deputy Commissioner, Anjum Parvez, who is a member of the committee, said here today that the meeting would be chaired by the Director of the Sugar Directorate, Manjunath. The committee would hear the opinions of representatives of the workers and farmers immediately after the meeting.

The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, who is keen on reviving the factory, accepted the suggestions of the Aland MLA, B.R. Patil to constitute a committee to consider the revival of the factory.

Mr. Dharam Singh also earmarked Rs. 1.5 crores for the factory as part of the special package sanctioned to the district. This amount is to be used to overhaul the machinery and purchase chemicals for the factory.

Apart from this, the State Government also released Rs. 75 lakhs for the payment of four months' pending salary to the employees of the factory.

Farmers' dues

Meanwhile, Mr. Parvez, who is also the administrator of the factory, said that the payment of the last instalment of dues to farmers who supplied sugarcane to the factory in 1994-95 began today.

The factory administration had obtained special permission from the directorate and the courts to auction the sugar available in the factory to clear the dues of the farmers.

A sum of Rs. 2.8 crores as principal and Rs. 3.5 crores as interest had been paid to farmers for sugarcane supplied in 1994-95.

The remaining dues of Rs. 2.5 crores for sugarcane supplied to the factory in subsequent years was being cleared and the process would be completed by the end of February, he added.
