Shimoga

Book-lovers browsing at an exhibition in Shimoga on Tuesday.
SHIMOGA, NOV. 16. A 10-day Kannada book exhibition organised by the Karnataka Sangh, which opened here on Tuesday, has proved to be a big draw. More than 1,000 books brought out by over 10 leading publishers in the State are on display at the exhibition. D.C. Rajappa, Additional Superintendent of Police, who himself is a poet, inaugurated the exhibition. He regretted the declining reading habit among the people. He blamed the visual media for the dwindling interest in reading. He was confident that the charm of the visual media would wane and people would return to books. Mr. Rajappa said if the declining reading habit directly affected readers the growing tendency not to buy books affected authors and publishers financially. S.V. Thimmaiah, joint secretary of the National Education Society, who was the chief guest, likened a house bereft of books to a cemetery. Books stacked neatly in a showcase added grace to a house. He said the books were not only the means to acquire knowledge but also a symbol of tradition that needed to be protected by the people. Pandurang Udupa, Karnataka Sangh president, who presided over the function, said it was not enough if books were neatly displayed in a shelf; they should be read extensively. Jayadevappa Jainakeri, sangh secretary, welcomed the gathering. Vijaya Sridhar proposed a vote of thanks.
