BANGALORE, NOV. 16. The State Government has made elaborate arrangements for the conference of the Southern Regional Chief Ministers on the mid-term appraisal of the Tenth Five-Year Plan here on Wednesday. The conference hall on the third floor of the Vidhana Soudha has been spruced up and tight security maintained around the entire area in view of the participation of the Chief Ministers and the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Montek Singh Ahluwalia. The hall has been air-conditioned for the first time. According to the agenda of the consultation conference, the participants will discuss with Dr. Ahluwalia development issues for the rural masses such as agricultural credit, rural unemployment, food-for-work programme, urban and rural infrastructure and the like. The conference will be formally inaugurated by Dr. Ahluwalia, who will have one-to-one meetings with the Chief Ministers to discuss State-specific issues. According to the Director of the State Hospitality Organisation, V.G. Diwakar, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, will not be attending the conference. The Finance Minister of that State, C. Ponnayyan, will also not make it. Only officials from that State will participate in the conference.
Dignitaries arrive
The Chief Ministers of Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, Oommen Chandy and Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, respectively, have already arrived here. The Maharashtra Chief Minister, Vilas Rao Deshmukh, and the Pondicherry Chief Minister, Rangasamy, are expected on Wednesday.
