CHENNAI, NOV. 16. The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, G.K. Vasan, today came down on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad for their attempts to link the arrest of the Kanchi Acharya with the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi. In a statement here, Mr. Vasan said the attempt was not only politically motivated but also an "indecent act." It was the same BJP and the VHP which portrayed the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, as the saviour of Hindutva when she greeted Narendra Modi soon after he assumed charge as the Gujarat Chief Minister, recalled Mr. Vasan. Condemning the BJP for trying to perpetuate communal disharmony by trying to mix religion with politics, he said it was creating an impression that the arrest of the Acharya was against the Hindu religion. The Congress was confident that real culprits would be brought before law and punished. But the party was perturbed at the alleged involvement of the Kanchi Mutt, formed to protect the Hindu dharma, in a controversy, he said. Instead of politicising the issue, political parties should allow the law to take its course, said Mr. Vasan.
