CHENNAI, NOV. 16. As many as 33 items in the category of mechanical engineering are among the list of 85 items which have been dereserved with reference to the small scale industry (SSI) sector by the Union Government this year. The list of dereservation (made public now) includes ten items in the category of chemicals and chemical pro- ducts. The Government has also raised the investment limit (within the SSI sector) to Rs. 5 crores (from Rs. 1 crore) in plant and machinery for the following seven items of sports goods: all types of sports nets, shuttle cocks, hockey sticks, protective equipment like pads, gloves (soft leather), dumb bells and expanders, cricket and hockey balls and covers of football/volleyball/basketball.
Nomenclature
The nomenclature of ten items in the SSI reserved list has been changed. With the latest pruning (in tune with the announcement made in the budget speech of the Union Finance Minister), a total of 605 items still remain on the reserved list, including 150 items in the mechanical engineering category and 67 in the category of `other chemicals and chemical products.' The number of items in various categories in the latest dereservation exercise include the following: `food and food products' category: three items, including sweetened cashew nut products, tapioca sago and tapioca flour; `wood and wood products' 5; paper products 8 (including waxed paper, paper cones, drinking straws, sanitary towels); rubber products 1; chemical and chemical products 10; natural essential oils 5 (including sandalwood oil, pine oil-excepting composite scheme, eucalyptus oil, lemongrass oil, palm rosa oil); organic chemicals, drugs and intermediates 1 (rosin); other chemicals and chemical products 5 (including shoe/metal/floor polishes). Glass and ceramics 5 (including wooden/glass/granite/marble roofing tiles, wooden flooring tiles); mechanical engineering 33 (including CI manhole covers, domestic utensils made of various metals, razors, non-specialised duplica- ting machines, postal weighing machines and all poultry equipment); electrical and electronic machines 3; electronic component 1; auto parts, ancillaries, equipment 4 (including luggage carriers); others 1 (spectacle hinges).
