KOZHIKODE, NOV. 16. The students in various batches of the Electrical & Electronics (EE) branch at the Calicut University Institute of Engineering and Technology (CUIET) are on the warpath against non-sanctioning of No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the branch by the State Government, which is mandatory for securing recognition of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The students of the CIUET, a self-financing engineering college started by the University in 2001, say that the Institute which had secured AICTE approval for Electronics and Communication, Information Technology, Printing Technology and Mechanical Engineering branches in 2001-02, admitted students to Electrical & Electronics branch in the same year. But it had no AICTE approval. Last year, when the CUIET authorities approached the AICTE, they were asked to secure a NOC from the State Government as a condition for granting approval for the branch.
Plea to Government
The students say that the University authorities and students' and PTA representatives had visited Chief Minister and Education Minister to press for the NOC. However, even after a year now, the issue has been hanging fire. The students blame both the University and the Government for the delay. Even representations to the State Governor could not yield any concrete steps. About 240 students are studying in various batches and the final year students (the first batch of the Institute) are about to pass out this year even as apprehensions are raised over the non-recognition of the course by the AICTE.
Decision soon
When contacted, the CUIET Principal-in-charge, Santhosh P. Mathew, said that it was only a matter of one or two weeks for issuing of the NOC by the Government. "The matter will be taken up by the State Cabinet, probably next week. Definitely, the recognition will be granted before the students finish the course period,'' he said. The students under the banner of the Club and Association for Electrical and Electronics of CUIET are planning an agitation demanding early action on the issue. As a first step, the students will organise a `university march'' on November 18 to press for an assurance from the University that the matter will be taken up before the Government by the University Registrar.
