KANCHEEPURAM, NOV.16. The Judicial Magistrate Court today posted for November 18 a petition seeking police custody of the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi. The Magistrate, G. Uthamaraj, directed the police to bring the Sankaracharya to the court on that day. The police team investigating the murder of Sankararaman, manager of Sri Varadarajaperumal temple here, brought two "accused" to the court for remand extension. Counsel for Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, V. Thiyagarajan, lodged petitions seeking copies of the documents relating to the Acharya's arrest and a copy of the petition seeking police custody. The court extended the judicial custody of one of the accused, Rajni alias Chinna. It also extended the police custody by two days of the other accused, Kathiravan. Police had sought three days of custody in this case. When a lawyer submitted that the court proceedings were being obstructed by the "presence of outsiders" in the court hall, all "outsiders" were asked to leave. Some persons dressed in black directed the media too to leave the court. The Hindu Munnani, Kancheepuram unit, and followers of the Kanchi Sankara Mutt organised a human chain near the Mutt around 1 p.m. and raised slogans demanding the immediate release of the Sankaracharya.
