Sadhus court arrest in Hardwar
By Our Staff Correspondent
DEHRA DUN,
NOV. 16.
About 1,000 sadhus courted arrest in Hardwar today in protest against the arrest of the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi.
At a public meeting at Sankaracharya Chowk, the speakers, including the former Union Minister, Chinmayanand; Satyamitranand of the Bharat Mata Mandir; Parmanand Saraswati of the All-India Akhara Parishad; Hans Das of the All-India Sant Samiti; Brahmaswaroop Brahmachari, the former treasurer of the Uttaranchal unit of the Congress; Rajender Pankaj of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad; and Madan Kaushik, BJP MLA, warned the Centre and the Tamil Nadu Government of "dire consequences" if the Acharya was not released immediately.
"We cannot believe the Centre's stand that it was not aware of the plans to arrest the Sankaracharya."
