Tamil Nadu sends report on arrest to Centre

By J. Venkatesan

NEW DELHI, NOV. 16 . The Tamil Nadu Government has sent a report to the Centre on the circumstances leading to the arrest of the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, on the night of November 11.

This was in response to the Centre asking the State Government on Friday last to provide it detailed information on the arrest.

Sources said that the report virtually incorporated the contents of the counter-affidavit filed by the prosecution in the Madras High Court on November 13 on the bail application filed on behalf of the Acharya. Some additional information had also been furnished.

The report alleged that there was sufficient evidence, before and after the murder of Sankararaman (manager of Sri Varadaraja Perumal temple in Kancheepuram)on September 3, to prove the case against the Acharya. It stated that incriminating documents seized from the victim's residence had established a very strong motive for the murder, which was allegedly perpetrated at the instigation of and deep-rooted conspiracy hatched by the Acharya, his hirelings and associates. Adequate steps had been taken to protect law and order in the State arising out of the arrest.
