THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 16. The inner party conflict in the RSP (B), a constituent of the ruling UDF, took a different turn with the party general secretary, A. V. Thamarakshan, demanding in writing the removal of the Labour Minister, Babu Divakaran, from the Oommen Chandy Cabinet. Addressing a press conference here today, Mr. Thamarakshan said that he had given a letter to the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, and the UDF convener, P. P. Thankachan, raising the demand for Mr. Divakaran's removal. He had also written to the Speaker, Therambil Ramakrishnan, informing him about the election of Mr. Shibu Baby John as the leader of the RSP (B) legislature party.
Decision awaited
Mr. Thamarakshan hoped that the UDF leadership would take a decision on Mr. Divakaran's continuance in office before the Assembly session begins on December 1. He was of the opinion that the current problems were an internal affair of the RSP (B) and there was no need for the UDF to discuss it. The RSP (B) split had been formalised a few weeks ago. However, this is for the first time that the demand for Mr. Divakaran's removal has been put forward. The UDF leadership is yet to take a decision, which would have to wait till the Chief Minister returns from his Bangalore visit. The UDF convener had sent notices to both Mr. Thamarakshan and Mr. Divakaran for the liaison committee meeting during the first week of November. The same tactic is likely to be adopted, even though the issue might not be discussed in the committee meeting.
Major difference
The usual coalition practice is to accommodate splinter parties. This had been done in the case of the Kerala Congress (M), when it split with T. M. Jacob forming his own party. In the LDF, the Kerala Congress (Joseph) recently split, but the splinter faction was accommodated in the LDF. But there is one major difference this time. The Congress appears to be in no mood for any kind of accommodation. The current thinking in the Congress is that the RSP (B) should be kept out till it resolves its internal problems and a Congress nominee should fill the vacant slot.
