Seer's arrest: BJYM leaders go on fast

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI, NOV. 16. Condemning the attitude of the Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh Governments vis-a-vis the arrest of the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswati, on a criminal charge, leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) sat on relay hunger strike here on Tuesday.

While the Chief Minister, Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy, came under fire for allowing the arrest in his State, the activists shouted slogans against the Tamil Nadu Opposition leader, M.Karunanidhi, and not the Chief Minister, J. Jayalalithaa.

Apology sought

Demanding that the two leaders spell out an open apology to Hindus, the State general secretary, G. Bhanuprakash Reddy, also saw the hand of Christian missionaries and foreign elements behind the arrest. He also urged the Hindus to unite in condemning the step.

The State Dalit Morcha member, M.V.S.Mani, described the arrest as a cowardly act.

K.V.Ranganathan, a hotelier who represents the Kanchi Mutt in Tirupati visited the camp and expressed solidarity with the BJYM leaders.
