Nellore
By Our Staff Reporter
NELLORE, NOV.16. The Nellore Eye Donors' Organisation (NEDO), which was established 17 years ago by a few committed persons, led by T. Sukumar Reddy, has so far collected 147 pairs of eyes and helped several unfortunate persons to regain eye sight. What has started as a society to create an awareness among people, with regard to eye donation, has in these years, grown up into an organisation catering to needs of people in distress. The NEDO sends volunteers to different parts of the district, to spread the noble message of eye donation along with literature. Some times it ropes in doctors and other learned persons to give lectures and present illustrations for the benefit of people. Doubts are cleared and every attempt is made to remove apprehensions. This has created the much-needed awareness among people, helping the NEDO to spread its wings to various parts of the district. Sometimes, the NEDO faced piquant situations in view of superstition in the society, more particularly when it came to the need of collecting eyes from the dead. However it has overcome all these impediments by adopting persuasive methods. All that the NEDO needs is information about the aged or those whose condition continues to be critical. However, the donors or their close relatives have to declare the willingness to offer the eyes. Once this is done, the NEDO keeps its volunteers in touch with the families of donors. During this year, so far it has collected five pairs of eyes.
Lack of eye bank
However the NEDO feels handicapped to preserve the eyes at Nellore, due to lack of an eye bank and it has to transport the eyes to Egmore, Chennai, which sometimes proves to be a laborious task. The founders of NEDO were also responsible for spreading the message of yet another noble task, namely blood donation, and helped a number of people in emergencies. Those interested can contact the organisers at phone number: 2325125.
